Student-Athletes Honored at Athletic Banquet

ABINGTON, Pa. - Penn State Abington concluded the 2012-13 sports season with its annual athletic banquet on Monday, May 13, 2012, at the Lares Building on campus.
 
Over 150 student-athletes and cheerleaders received individual honors.
 
Golfer, Dylan Amin and women's basketball player, Jessica Schmidt received the Wes Olsen Memorial Scholar Athlete Award. This award was established in 1980 by the former Athletic Director, Wes Olsen, to honor one male and female athlete who participated in the current school year and has the highest cumulative GPA after completion of two semesters. 
 
Men's basketball standout Mike Marvin and Schmidt each won the Outstanding Student-Athlete award, given to the most outstanding student-athlete who has demonstrated the characteristics commensurate with the Penn State Abington athletic tradition of leadership, character, and morals.
 
Men's cross-country runner Austin Lichtman and men's soccer player, Philip Curry each won the Fred Striet Memorial Award presented to a student-athlete who demonstrates the “leadership and character, pride in academics, and growth and perfection through sports.”
 
Tennis player, Ross Raddi was honored with the Al Miles Memorial Tennis Award which demonstrates the benefits of being a student-athlete on and off the tennis court, being a full time student, completing two semesters with a 3.0 grade point average with excellence in English/Humanities and demonstrated the interests in learning and teaching the game of tennis.
 
Women's volleyball coaches, Doug Blystone, Scott Branson, and George Greiner were all honored with the Jim McGettigan Coach of the Year award who best demonstrates leadership by meeting all requirements of their position, who motivates players through positive reinforcements, and recognizes and rewards players who consistently work hard. The team maintained a commitment to academic achievement, handled adversity well and honors the spirit of their sport through showing respect to opponents, officials and the game.
 
This season was another successful one for Penn State Abington, which won several team and individual awards. 11 of the 13 teams qualified for the NEAC postseason play, an all time high in one academic year. The men's soccer team hosted its first NEAC Championship, as the cross-country squad hosted its first NEAC Championship invitational as well. Women's volleyball and softball made its first mark for the conference championship for the first time in program history since joining the NEAC in 2009.
 
Individually, four players were named NEAC Player of the Year. Alex Kane became the first runner to be named NEAC Rookie of the Year and Runner of the Year, winning the NEAC Championship in first place individually. Mike Marvin was named NEAC men's basketball Player of the Year, while Bill Parave was also named NEAC baseball Player of the Year. Softball player, Michaela Drogalis, made her mark on the year, breaking the all-time record for most wins in a season with 21, earning her NEAC Pitcher of the year. Overall, forty plus student-athletes were named to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) All-Conference Team throughout the 2012-13 sport season.
